Young Adult Science Fiction book.
Basically, the boy crashes while an upper classman in a futuristic politically neutral space pilot academy. He is flown home near light speed to heal and live the rest of his life. He heals quickly then immediately flys back to the academy at near light speed. All these years of near light speed travel means he has not aged much, but 40 years has passed in regular time.
When he returns to the school to reenlist under an assumed name (I think), he is 16 years old and his old nemesis that he blames for his crash is now middle aged and the principal of the school. Conspiracy and love story ensues with the principal as the antagonist.
I read this book as an elementary school child and I would love to get my hands on it again. Any help? I can remember the exposition of the plot but not much else. I remember there was some kind of weird ball alien with tentacles on the cover that I do not think had much to do with the plot.
