3 month old baby only going to sleep 11pm/midnight, please help?
I am breastfeeding my baby, and am having difficulty only with putting him to bed. During the day he will have various naps, like 1 day he might have an hours nap during the day and another day he may have 3 hours, either way he’s still the same at night.

We give him a bottle of formula at 9pm at night and then he will want to come back on me to fall asleep for comfort, which I’m fine with, it’s just that he’s going to sleep at the same time as us and we’re not getting anytime to ourselves and I feel like our baby is dictating when we can go to sleep, not the other way round.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I recommend checking out Kim West’s book "Good Night Sleep Tight". It provided us with some great tips on how to get our son to sleep through the night. One point she makes is to make sure baby is going down drowsy but awake. He needs to learn how to put himself to sleep so if he does wake in the night he can put himself back to sleep. There are ways to comfort them in the crib without picking them up like making a "sh.. sh… sh…" sound that mimics the sound of your heartbeat. A hand on them to rock them a bit in the crib. Swaddling, and if they want swaddling with their hands free.

She talks about the importance of a bedtime routine. For our 3 month old, we do book, bottle, bath, diaper change, massage, put on the PJs and into the crib. Now her book will recommend against giving them a bottle to put them to sleep, but because our bedtime routine takes so long I will give him a "topper-up" bottle and do a bottle/soother switch before stealthy slipping out of the room.

I know that he’ll sometimes cry for a few minutes as he’s going to sleep, particularly if he is overtired, so I try to go to the kitchen where I can hear him if he’s really crying, but if he’s doing his little tired whimpers I can’t hear him, so it doesn’t make me upset. When I do go in to comfort him I try hard not to pick up him up unless he’s worked himself right up.

All these things are talked about in her book, and I like the book because it breaks down sleeping into months, so it lets you know what to do for each stage. The book also deals with co-sleeping, nightmares, siblings and all kinds of other stuff. I also like that she isn’t hardcore about babies sleeping in their own bed, or co-sleeping, so her book applies for both situations.
